  • PROJECT

Carl Hansen & Søn's Japanese store and showroom opened on 2 April 2014, marking the centenary of Hans J. Wegner's birth, and is located in Jingumae in Tokyo's Aoyama district, in the north-eastern Minato Ward. Aoyama is renowned for its galleries and design, fashion and home furnishings lifestyle stores. The district is home to many fashionable restaurants, and together with the Shibuya and Harajuku districts, it is one of Tokyo's most popular areas for the city's trend-setting youth.

  • LAYOUT & FURNISHINGS

The new store gives the Japanese the opportunity to experience Danish design classics under one roof, and Carl Hansen & Søn has found the ideal setting for the purpose. The six-meter-high glass facade in the slightly inclined street offers a good view of the store's two-story foyer, where colorful Wishbone Chairs hang on the wall in a three-by-five array. A sculptural spiral staircase in the foyer, painted in white, connects the store's two floors.

The white interior and light-colored wooden floors provide a beautiful background for the displayed furniture, which is arranged in groups, reminiscent of a stylish Scandinavian home. The abundant natural lighting adds to the bright Danish-inspired atmosphere.

The first floor is devoted to Carl Hansen & Søn's furniture designs, created by Hans J. Wegner, Ole Wanscher, Tadao Ando and others. The ground floor has been furnished as a special Rud. Rasmussen universe, with furniture designed by Kaare Klint, Mogens Koch, Mogens Lassen and more. This is the first time the collection from the illustrious 145-year-old Rud. Rasmussen joinery has been put on display in Japan – or anywhere in Asia. Rud. Rasmussen became part of Carl Hansen & Søn in December 2011.

AT THE OPENING, CEO KNUD ERIK HANSEN SAID:

"In Japan, design and quality craftsmanship is highly appreciated. The Japanese have their own long and proud tradition of beautiful craftsmanship, using natural materials, with a minimalist expression. Japan and Denmark share common values in this area. The Japanese particularly applaud Wegner's minimalist approach to furniture design and his use of wood in his timeless and elegant furniture. It therefore makes sense for us to open a store in Tokyo, which can serve as a platform for greater visibility in the urban landscape, thereby increasing awareness of the Carl Hansen & Søn brand in Japan."
