  • PROJECT

For five weeks in the winter of 2015, Noma has set up its temporary home as a pop-up restaurant in Tokyo. It is taking place at the Mandarin Oriental Tokyo from January 9 to February 14. The top-ranked Michelin restaurant has chosen Carl Hansen & Søn to set the scene, and the chairs used, CH46, one also finds in the private dining room at Noma in Copenhagen.

  • LAYOUT & FURNISHINGS

For the Tokyo restaurant, Carl Hansen & Søn crafted the chairs out of oak cut from over 200-year-old trees from sustainable Danish forests, using a black-lacquered finish to give them contemporary appeal despite their over 50-year design heritage. The hand-wowen natural paper cord seat, enhances aesthetics and comfort. Carl Hansen & Søn topped the seats with black leather cushions designed specifically for Noma Japan for additional comfort and exclusivity. As a novelty for the Noma pop-up restaurant in Tokyo, the CH46 chairs are combined with custom designed dining tables created by Carl Hansen & Søn especially for the unique occasion.

MANAGING DIRECTOR PETER KREINER ON THE CHOICE OF CH46:

Commenting on the décor, Kreiner says, “we wished to maintain a link to our home restaurant, and incorporating the modern Danish aesthetic was a big part of recreating the ambience our Copenhagen guests enjoy. We selected Wegner’s CH46 chairs for Noma in Copenhagen, so it was the natural choice to offer the same visual and sensory experience to our guests in Japan. Carl Hansen & Søn’s bespoke tables complement and help complete the warm, organic, authentic experience.”

Knud Erik Hansen, CEO of Carl Hansen & Søn, says, “both in our Copenhagen collaboration with Noma and now in Tokyo, sharing a similar heritage and philosophy has made for a very harmonious partnership. Noma’s passion for the best natural ingredients and the Nordic culinary heritage, our passion for craftsmanship, Wegner’s passion for timeless design and natural materials – they all complement one another. We are grateful to be a part of Noma’s Japanese adventure and this feast for the senses, and feel that Wegner’s CH46 is the ideal modern classic to help set the mood.”
